The city of Sucre was founded On September 29, 1538 by Pedro de Anzures, the Marquess of Campo Redondo by the name of "La Plata", on an old city of the Charcas Indians.
July 12, 1839 is declared the constitutional capital of the Republic of Bolivia. GEOGRAPHICAL ASPECTS Chuquisaca's department is placed in the center South of the country to 2.790 meters on the level of the sea and has a territorial area of 51.524 Km2. It has borders in the north with Cochabamba, in the south with Tarija, in the east with Santa Cruz and the Republic of the Paraguay and in the west with Potosí. TEMPERATURE The climate changes with the altitude, of subtropical, subhumid to tropical dry. The temperature of the city of Sucre is of 18ªC average. POPULATION Chuquisaca's department possesses a population of 589.948 habitants (Estimated 2000 INE) and a density of 11.45 habitants per Km2. The city of Sucre has a population of 223.435 habitants.
