The department of Santa Cruz, the biggest in surface of Bolivia, is one of the zones of major demographic growth of South America and the zone of major economic growth of the country for its agriculture, its agroindustry and its important tourist attractions. On February 26, 1561 don Ñuflo de Chávez founded the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, name put in honoring to his natal villa in Estremadura (Spain).
It is a region favoured by the nature. Both the capital, and the scenes that the Department of Santa Cruz encloses, have a tropical climate, and the tourists can visit any place in any epoch of the year. The warm climate allows to the visitor to enjoy the good gastronomy of Santa Cruz. The tourism has a splendid reception, in virtue to the marvellous hotel infrastructure, also there is offered to the visitor the possibility of visiting restaurants of different category, typical and varied environments. Out of the city and interrupted in some parts for creeks, glens, hills, rivers, forests, lagoons, mountains and plains,you find Chiquitos, nailed in a fantastic fertile hill. San Javier's Missions, Concepcion, San Ignacio, Santa Ana, San Rafael, San Miguel and San Jose show today their history.
In another place, it is possible to observe the majestic monument known today with the name of " Fuerte de Samaipata ", located to 200 kilometres of the SAnta cruz capital and to 10 of the region that takes the same name. From the gigantic mass of stone, which if it was a viewing-point, you can see the most of the valleys of Santa Cruz.
GEOGRAPHICAL ASPECTS The department of Santa Cruz is placed in the Oriental part of the country to 457 meters on the level of the sea with a territorial extension of 370,621 Km2. It has borders in the north with Beni, in the south with Chuquisaca and the Republic of Paraguay, in the east with the Republic of Brazil and in the west with Cochabamba and Chuquisaca.
TEMPERATURE The Climate changes in agreement to the geographical zone. It predominates the tropical humid climate, the average annual temperatures are of 27ºC, 23ºC and 17ºC .The place of major rain rainfall is the environment of the rivers Ichilo and Yapacaní with 2500mm and the zone of minor average of annual rainfall is Vallegrande with 500 mm. POPULATION The department of Santa Cruz possesses a population of 1.812.522 habitants (Estimated 2000 INE) and a density of 4.89 habitants per Km2. The city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra has a population of 1.034.070 habitants.
