The 1 º of April, 1545. date of " Capture and Possession of the Cerro Rico " is admitted as that the foundation of Potosí's city, for the captains Juan de Villaroel and Diego of Centeno, by the name of " the Imperial Ville of Carlos V ".
The word "Potosí" is used as a symbol of a rich mountain where the conquerors extracted sufficient silver, to do of Spain one of the most powerful countries of this epoch. According to the legend in the year of 1545 Diego Huallpa, a local shepherd, lost his llama(South American mammal) and when he found her, already very late to return to his house,he did a bonfire to pass the night. The following day he found silver in the place where he did the bonfire.
Located in the arid Altiplano, very few streets are straight, the most of them have curves and angles, which helps to break the strong wind that is always blowing. The streets are paved and others have an old cobble. The balconies carved in thin wood contrast with simpler others. The principal income to the palaces and mansions give to know the family shields carved in granite.
The Royal House of the coin, it is a relic that bears witness to the commercial symbol of an epoch in which the financial activity was fulfilling an important role in Potosí and the world. Today it has turned into an extraordinary museum and an exceptional monument of the architecture of the 18th century.
GEOGRAPHICAL ASPECTS Potosí's department is placed in the South-western angle of the country with a height of 3.976 meters on the level of the sea, with a surface of 118.218 Km2. It has borders in the north with Cochabamba and Oruro, in the sout with the Republic of the Argentina, in the east with Chuquisaca and Tarija and in the west on the Republic of Chile.
TEMPERATURE The climate in Potosí's department is cold with exception of some valleys of moderate climate that you can find between the mountains. One of the coldest zones of Bolivia its placed in this department the "Uyuni's salar" , where the temperature descends to 20 ª under zero in the winter. POPULATION La población del departamento de Potosí es de 774.696 habitantes (Estimada 2000 INE) con una densidad de población de 6.55 por Km2. La ciudad de Potosí tiene una población de 162.212 habitantes (Estimada 2000 INE).
